What Is Musi?

Musi is a free app that allows you to stream music, build playlists, and create a music library.  Its available for iPhone and works with the help of YouTube.

This app is completely free and works much like searching for music on YouTube. The key difference that sets this app apart, is that it only streams the audio.

Musi was founded by Aaron Wojnowski and Christian Lunny when they were just 19 years old. The pair is from Winnipeg and saw the opportunity for a new app that would change how their peers streamed music.

MusiWojnowski built his first apps while he was in Grade 9 but it wasn’t until the pair met in Grade 12 that they came up with the idea to create an app for curating YouTube content. With other video streaming services, gaining in popularity and new hit songs being posted to YouTube regularly, it was the perfect time to launch their app.

The founders agree that while other apps exist that are similar to Musi, none of them have the extended features that Musi offers its users. With the Musi app, you can manage playlists, curate a list of your favorite songs, and play only the audio which can help to save your phone battery.

The revenue for the Musi app comes from the ads that are within the app. A small banner app is present on the screen which allows the founders to offer the app for free while still gaining valuable funds to further improve the features of the app itself.

Where Can I Download the Musi App?

The Musi app is currently only available for iPhone and can be downloaded from the iTunes store, or on Google Play. From the iTunes store, you can download the app onto your iPhone or iPad for free.

Recent updates to the Musi app for iPhone include the ability to add or remove tracks from the Recently Added playlist and they have fixed a few bugs to improve the functionality of the playlists and tracks populating from YouTube.

They’ve also made recent improvements to the functionality of the available buttons in the app, and the full-screen video player now closes automatically once a video is done playing. Users of the app are encouraged to submit feedback, and the app is rated for users 12 years old and up.

The reviews are very positive, and users have been supplying helpful feedback to Musi that has clearly been heard. Improvements to the app seem to stem mostly from user feedback, and the 4.8 out of 5-star rating reflects the many happy users of this app.

A version of the Musi app for Android is not currently offered, and there is no information about whether or not it will be available in the future.

How Does Musi Stream from YouTube?

Musi is a simple app that searches YouTube for posted videos and then only plays the audio portion of that content. For example, if you search on Musi for Christian music on YouTube you will see a list of all of the music that is relevant to what you typed in.

Musi then allows you to save the titles of those songs to your library and playlists on the app. When you use the app, it streams the content directly from YouTube by using the internet.

The more content that you add, the longer you can listen to music using the Musi app. Right now, YouTube does not have any measures that prevent users from streaming their content using the Musi app.

Since the app connects to the internet in order to stream music, be sure to use WIFI on your phone so that you don’t consume all of your data while listening to music.

How Do I Build a Library or Playlist Using Musi?

Once you have the Musi app downloaded, creating a playlist is easy.

  1. Click on “Playlists” and then select “My Library”
  2. A search bar is available at the top of the screen and once you start typing, various titles will begin to appear. Add as much music to your library as you like because that music is then available for adding to playlists.
  3. Once there is music in your library, you can click on “Create” in the top right corner to make a new playlist.
  4. Music can only be added to your playlist if it is currently in your library. From the library, you can click on songs to add to the playlist.

If your friends are also using Musi you can connect with them by sending links to YouTube videos, or by sending them an invite. The Musi app will be able to search your contacts and let you know who you know that is also using Musi.

It’s generally recommended that you add as much music as you possibly can to your library in order to have the content that you need to create unique and different playlists to listen too. Since music can only be added to the playlist on Musi once the song is in your library, it’s generally a good idea to build up your library first in order to make creating playlists easier.

There is no known limit for how many songs you can add to your library, or how long playlists can be on Musi. Users can create playlists that are several hours long if they wish, and can also share songs with their friends that also use Musi.

The Pros and Cons of Using Musi

Musi was very well received by iPhone users when it was released and has fantastic ratings online from people that have been using their app. Since Musi is a simple, yet well designed, the app it has reached a broad audience looking to create their own library and playlists without having to store music on their phone.

Here are some pros and cons of the Musi app:

Pros:

  • Users can create lengthy playlists
  • The app is totally free
  • Better way to stream YouTube content without the video portion
  • High-quality streaming that is fast and without lag
  • You don’t have to pay in order to use all of the features

Cons:

  • The app does have a banner ad on the screen
  • Not everyone is a fan of the user interface, some find it awkward
  • Songs need to be touched to be moved in a playlist which often results in accidentally playing the song instead
  • Not available for Android

For those who are unsure, the Musi app is definitely worth a download, and a test run to see if it will work for you. Getting the app set up and playing lengthy playlists takes very little time, and songs can be deleted or re-ordered to fit the preferences of the user.

Users also report that being able to share songs easily with friends is a huge bonus that Musi has over other apps. The simple gestures make it easy to use and saves time so that you can listen to more music instead of being on your phone.

Musi Founders on The TV Show Dragon’s Den

Musi was very well received by users and the app has been downloaded well over a million times. While having such a large following and user base is not uncommon for a phone app, Musi is unique in how simple it is, and how it offers a simple streaming service that is broadly useful to a wide array of users.

Wojnowski and Lunny appeared on the popular show, The Dragon’s Den, where entrepreneurs compete to gain investors and their contacts in order to further their business ventures. While the show is primarily designed for the entertainment of the masses, the businesses themselves are real, and many of them go on to have great success.

The Musi founders were able to secure a deal on the show, which included asking for $125,000 in exchange for 15% equity stake in their business. One of the investors on the show agreed to a 15% stake and Musi got the funding it needed to grow.

Even though Musi was valued at $833,000 at the time, Wojnowski and Lunny felt that it was too risky to re-invest all of their earnings back into their app. What they really wanted was better marketing, branding, and advertising to build on what they had already created.

Their investor from the show, Joe Mimran, who agreed to fund Musi also offered another $75,000 if needed, and he brings lots of experience in the product development sector that Wojnowski and Lunny were most interested in.

Unfortunately, due to legal concerns over the streaming of YouTube content, the deal did not end up going through. Should YouTube decide to change parts of their content to be subscription only, that could put Musi in jeopardy, as users may not be able to fully use the app as they had before.

Wojnowski and Lunny have lots of work to do on the legal side of things for Musi, but the app is still going strong. Investors may find the app to be higher risk, but the founders are currently pursuing legal channels to solidify Musi, and offer more stability for future investors and users.
